What does Ouroboros even mean?

The Ouroboros is an ancient symbol, typically depicted as a snake or dragon devouring its own tail.

It first appeared in ancient Egyptian iconography in 1400 BCE- where it represented the sun’s cyclical journey and the regenerative power of the afterlife.

The Greeks later adopted the symbol, using it to convey ideas of wholeness, and associated it with alchemy,

Over milenea, Ouroboros took on broader philosophical meanings, signifying infinity, unity, and rebirth.

We chose the name Ouroboros because we see no better analogy for psychedelic therapy than rebirth through alchemy. We also believe our project represents unity, and can help create new advances in mental health research that change how we see mental health and how we treat one another globally.

We are a registered UK non-profit dedicated to funding psychedelic research.

We do this primarily through immersive fundraising events, and philanthropic projects which you can take a at here.

We also host educational workshops dedicated to psychedelic research advocacy, fostering responsible exploration of psychoactive substances, and promoting mental well-being.

Through education and community engagement, we aim to empower individuals with the knowledge and resources needed to navigate these experiences safely and meaningfully.

At The Ouroboros Foundation, he leads visual media strategy, supports immersive event production, and contributes to the Foundation’s mission of bridging art, science, and spirit.

J. David Wood, RN

Founding Director

J. David Wood, RN is a registered nurse, former U.S. National Park Service Wilderness Ranger, and mountain guide whose life bridges clinical care, ecological stewardship, and Indigenous wisdom. A citizen of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, David holds a Bachelor of Science in Natural Sciences and Mycology from The Evergreen State College, where his studies deepened his understanding of ecological systems, fungal intelligence, and humanity’s vital connection to the natural world. His connection to wild landscapes is grounded in lived experience. As a Wilderness Ranger in Olympic National Park, he worked in one of North America’s most biodiverse ecosystems—nearly one million acres of temperate rainforest, alpine peaks, and coastal terrain. He later served as a mountain guide with the American Alpine Institute, leading technical expeditions across Western North America and cultivating a reverence for resilience, interdependence, and the sacredness of wild places. Clinically, David has worked in both the U.S. and UK healthcare systems, with frontline experience in cardiac care, intensive care, and hospice nursing. These roles gave him intimate insight into the emotional and spiritual dimensions of suffering—and the urgent need for more relational, nature-connected approaches to healing. In founding The Ouroboros Foundation, David responded to the intertwined crises of mental health and ecological collapse. He sees psychedelics not merely as clinical tools, but as medicines of reconnection—capable of restoring our bonds with nature, with community, and with ancestral knowledge. His leadership focuses on Indigenous philosophy, animism, and panpsychism in psychedelic discourse, challenging reductionist views and supporting ceremonial integrity.

With 20+ years of experience in cultivating native and non-native plant medicines, she brings ecological expertise and philosophical depth to the Foundation’s educational mission. Her research explores animism and panpsychism as keys to understanding consciousness, and her work invites us to rewild the way we relate to healing, science, and spirit. Zephyr is a logistics and event coordinator at the Ouroboros Foundation.
